Review of the final project.

This post will look at reviewing the overall design process. Focusing on key areas such as suitability and if the final product clearly met the goals set out within key areas.

The original brief that was given by the client was for a series of poster looking at promoting their upcoming tour. They have asked that the posters would have a high impact value and look at highlighting 4 dates along with where members of the public can obtain the relevant tickets.

On reflection after gathering more information on the band .photographs that we could use of the band, the sort of colours that would give the sort of impact that the client was looking for, gathering all the tour information tickets box office information, and deciding on a name for the tour its self together with some design ideas the posters started to come together.

Working over the client brief trying to make sure that from information’s point of view the brief has been met along with one or two other Ideas that the client agreed to.

The starting points for the series of posters where the colours to be used so I started with an Internet search for images that made the best use of colour. After looking around two backgrounds where decided on.

Below is the first of two backgrounds that I decided to use.

 background 1  s curves1

I then decided that the background needed to be a bit more in keeping with the band.Ten Floors, being a new indie/rock band. So using the s curve to give the background more of a colourful clean look that would have the impact the client was looking for the backgrounds took on and became sort of sixties in appearance

background 2 poster copy

Above is the second of the two backgrounds that have been used making good use of the s curve.

The next set of images that had to be look at was the photographs of the band after consideration the group photo was the only picture that was suitable from the point of view of impact on the overall poster.

band    arm 1

The biggest problem with this was that the picture had been cropped down both the left and the right sides leaving two of the band members with arms missing. So I had to make a selection of an arm using the lasso tool from the tools panel and then flipping the selected image over and use the clone tool and cloned part of the shirt from the image putting back the parts that are missing.

layers panelThe next part of the image that needed to be looked at was fitting the group photograph of the band into the background so that they looked quite at home within the picture and at the same time keeping the colourful impact , so in order to fade them in and add shadow I first grouped all the layers of the band together in a group layer. then I was able to add the s curve and hue/ and saturation until all the band members merged into the background.

Keeping both the impact and the colour , It was at this point that a name for the bands tour was decided on that came together due to the colours that have been used the RAINBOW TOUR , seem to be the sort of progression for both the poster and the bands and the client seem to agree. So looking back over the work that I have completed so fare and decideding on the next stage I liked the Idea of adding more shadows  to the group photo , so i created a new layer and flipped the whole band vertical and added a layer style by clicking on the small icon at the bottom of the layers panel. adding hue/saturation and adjusting the opacity creating the shadow.

The next stepwas the bands logo this needed to be included in the poster and the band already having a logo decided that we could drop the logo at the back of the four band members ,so by putting the logo on a separate layer and choosing a colour fill that matched the background then adding a new layer style and adding inner glow and drop shadows I was able to match up the logo with the rest of the poster. Then by using the layers panel and holding down the left mouse button and dragging one layer over the other I was able to bring the four band members to front of the logo and at the same time keeping the logo readable and within context.

hue and saturation

The last part of the poster was to put together all the information for the tour dates, ticket information and box office contact numbers all this information was supplied and using the text tool from the tools panel and deciding on a font style and size and colour match for the text so that the impact of the poster was not affected and was within keeping with everything else that was going on within the poster. it went nicely into place, together with the name of the bands UK tour.

The second postercame together very much in the same way as the first, The background was collected at the same time as the first and some of the same techniques that have been used for the first poster are the same , one very interesting advantage that came out of the second poster in terms of constructing all the Images was  I found by clicking on the layers of the first poster and holding down the mouse button and grading into the new second poster I was able to transfer the Images across,so I found that the band members group photograph could be transferred across quite easily to the second poster and then pushed around the second background and made to blend in and keep the impact the client was looking for.

So on reflectionI would have liked more photos of the band that would have given me  more to go on in terms of  the things I could have done with the poster and the impact it might have had, I think in a way the information that was given regarding the tour dates and venues that the band are undertaking is there for every body to see and completely understandable, with contact details for the box office and ticket information,so from that point of view the brief has been met, wet her the overall impact is quite right for the band I am not sure I would have liked more images of the band ( playing at gigs or on tour  even ) that would have given the second poster more variability and  more impact, trying to reach their target audience, I don’t see the Ten Floors and a boy band so I have tried to use Images that reflect on the sort of audience that would be attracted to this band and promoting them to the right target audience, I think the posters have a sixties feel and I am not sure this would be within keeping with the band.

JPG/JEPG Images

jpeg image

Jpeg Images are very useful and can be used in several ways but one of the drawbacks with these sort of Images are they are not editable so if we are to change any Image in photo-shop they would need to be re-opened as a PSD, file.PSD files are editable and are the file types that photo-shop will automatically save them as when opened.

JPEG Images are most frequently found within scanned Images , photographic Images that have been taken and these types of files are useful for sending work to other people printers and so on ,so after completing a project in photo-shop we would have to save the file out as a JPEG file type this could also be secure way of sending work out because they are not editable File types.

Your Final Reflection shows a good understanding of how you saw your 2 posters coming together. – A large part of this however could have been included in your previous post (Creative Process).

Where your Creative Process was somewhat hard to distinguish if you fully understood the technical process, the way you’ve described certain elements of your design within this post goes to show you have a good understanding how your posters came together.
